The Gallery: Reaching Across the World: The Hand of Fatima

Opening Reception:

6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The symbol known as the Hamsa, or Hand of Fatima, in Arab and Middle Eastern culture, is also a potent symbol in cultures around the world, from Asia, Africa, Latin America and even to the tribal cultures of Native Americans. This exhibition will explore the origins, symbolism and interpretations of this potent design with objects from all these cultures, with examples and an audience-interactive lecture.

NEH Summer Programs in the Humanities for School and College Educators

The National Endowment for the Humanities offers FUNDED summer seminars and institutes for college faculty. The programs are held in different locations and are on different topics. There is even one on “The Ottoman Empire, Europe, and the Mediterranean,” but there are many others as well. NEH provides a subsidy for housing/living expenses too.

I did one a few years ago, and it was amazing, life-changing, eye-opening. You get to travel throughout the West Bank, visiting universities and networking with professors. Spring 16 Arab Identities and Gender Roles in Conflict Zones in Film and Literature

Course meets MWF 1:30-2:20

• This course focuses on the processes of self-definition by Arab men and women in the Middle East and North Africa with relation to
o national and religious identities,
o social stratification,
o sexuality/homosexuality, and
o gender roles.

• Students will learn about the social, economic, and political contexts of the films and literary works representing the Maghreb, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, the Gulf countries, and Yemen.
