Produced for both the luxury and middle-class markets, these vessels, bowls, pitchers, and bottles reflect numerous cultural and artistic influences and an aesthetic sensibility that seems startling modern. |

Imam Atef Mahgoub is the Religious Director and Imam of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Imam Atef grew up studying in the Al-Azhar school system, and after memorizing the Holy Qur'an at a young age, he went on to obtain his bachelor's degree from Al-Azhar University. This gave him the opportunity to study the religion of Islam in-depth under the mentorship of some of the most well-known Islamic scholars. His website contains lectures, writings and a place to dialogue with the Imam. |

Al-Bab aims to introduce non-Arabs to the Arabs and their culture. Western explorers of the 18th and 19th centuries portrayed the Arab world as a strange, exotic and sometimes terrifying place. Al-Bab seeks to portray the Arab world neither as an object of fear nor as a cultural curiosity - fascinating though it may be. It tries to look beyond the strange or exotic, to show the Arab world as it is and to explain, as simply as possible, how it has become what it is. |
