Join the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh for a luncheon at the as we welcome H.E. Asad Majeed Khan, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the United States, to our city. Ambassador Khan will be discussing the intricacies of the relationship between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as well as Pakistan’s status and role in 21st century Asia.
The Early Modern Worlds Initiative and the World History Center present a year-long speaker series titled "Islam in the World". Four speakers have been invited (one in the fall and three in the spring), each of whom will give a talk as well as chair an informal brown bag session on "perspectives on the field" during their visit. A coalition of activists from the Thomas Merton Center and several different social and political advocacy groups in town are meeting in Oakland on August 25, at 10:30 a.m., for a rally in Schenley Plaza.
The organizers understand the U.S. is not technically “at war” with another country right now, a march such as ours is more necessary than ever. The US military budget now stands at $700 billion, which amounts to 54% of all discretionary spending. It is at its highest since 1945 in constant dollars, exceeding military spending during the Cold War and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
