In 2004, France enacted a law that banned the wearing of "conspicuous religious symbols," including and most critically, the hijab, in public schools. This legislation has sparked extensive debate and discourses surrounding secularism, religious freedom, and the "imposed" limits on the "integration" of Muslims in French society and Europe at large. As we mark the 20th anniversary of this significant exclusionary law, we invite scholars, activists, and practitioners to contribute to a critical examination of its implications, focusing on the intersection of Islamophobia, policy-making, and the lived experiences of Muslims in France and beyond.
