Bassel & The Supernaturals tells the story of Bassel Almadani's experience as a first generation Syrian-American—using soulful melodies and a funky style, deeply inspired by Otis Reading, and using captivating lyrics of love, loss, and the war in Syria.

The group is also deeply values driven, dedicated to building awareness and empathy for Syrian refugees. A substantial portion of their proceeds benefit the Karam Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization focused on building a better future for Syria.

A single mom, Abla, runs a modest bakery from her home in Casablanca where she lives with her 8-year old daughter. Enter a young pregnant woman looking for a job and a roof over her head. Unwilling at first to allow a stranger into their lives, Abla’s resolve softens and the change becomes a positive for all of them. In her book Television and the Afghan Culture Wars: Brought to You by Foreigners, Warlords, and Activists, Osman analyzes the impact of international funding and cross-border media flows on the national politics of Afghanistan, the region, and beyond. Fieldwork from across Afghanistan allowed Osman to record the voices of Afghan media producers and people from all sectors of society. Afghans offer their own seldom-heard views on the country’s cultural progress and belief systems, their understandings of themselves, and the role of international interventions.

The EU's relations with Iran have strengthened since the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. These relations have become more important now, as the current US administration is determined to further undermine the agreement by pressing the UN to restore economic sanctions and extend the arms embargo against Iran. The EU’s disagreement with the US position has brought the nuclear non-proliferation regime, the maintenance of international agreements, and the future of European relations with the US and Iran at a crossroads.

France is often portrayed as a case of color-blind civic ‘assimilation’ despite a shift to ‘integration’ since the 1980s. However, the creation of institutions such as the High Council for Integration (1989-2013) and the first ever census-based survey on the assimilation of immigrants and their France-born children (Mobilité géographique et insertion sociale, Tribalat 1993) signaled starting from the 1990s the foregrounding of cultural differentiation in public life and the promotion of ethnic origin as a framework and primary principle of classification (Bertaux 2016:1496).

This talk explores a series of photographs taken by a French photographer in Sudan in 1882. The photographs explores racial types for the "enlightenment" of the French government, yet reveal so much more about Khartoum society at a critical time in the city's history.
